Arrival
Set along a quiet side street in Kingston’s Historic Waterfront District, Kingston Carriage House feels calm from the moment you arrive. The restored property sits within walking distance of the Rondout Creek and Hudson River—close to the city’s energy, yet tucked away enough to feel settled.
Part of the Woodstock Way family of properties, Kingston Carriage House works well as a home base—somewhere to return to between time spent wandering Kingston’s neighborhoods, from the waterfront to Midtown and Uptown. The experience feels residential rather than hotel-like, grounded in place and easy to settle into.

The Property

Built in 1851, Kingston Carriage House carries a layered history that reflects Kingston’s working waterfront past. Over the years, the building has served as a saloon, oyster bar, ship chandler shop, and bed-and-breakfast—each chapter leaving its mark before the property evolved into what it is today.
Now thoughtfully reimagined, the property blends its storied 19th-century origins with a calm, modern design sensibility. Kingston Carriage House offers eight distinct accommodations across two buildings, the Captain’s House and the Coach House, with a mix of spacious ground-floor suites and more intimate loft-style rooms.
Shared spaces, including a communal garden lounge and a historic covered porch, feel like natural extensions of the house rather than added amenities—places to pause between outings or settle in at the start of the day.
All stays include complimentary coffee and a light breakfast, WiFi, Bellino Bed & Bath linens, Casa Posta toiletries, and handwoven robes by Mizar & Alcor. The experience feels layered and lived-in, shaped by history but designed for how people travel now.
Inside the Captain’s Loft

For our stay, we chose the Captain’s Loft, located on the second floor of the Captain’s House. What drew us immediately were the Moroccan-inspired accents—subtle but distinctive—and the unconventional bathtub, which gives the space a slightly unexpected, intimate feel.
The loft is light-filled and uncluttered, with an ease that encourages you to settle in rather than pass through. Design here feels artful but relaxed: textures layered with intention, everyday objects allowed to exist naturally, and enough openness to keep the space calm without feeling sparse.
It’s a room well suited for slow mornings, quiet resets after time spent out in the city, and evenings spent doing very little at all—dogs included.
Other Rooms

Beyond the Captain’s Loft, the Captain’s House includes additional accommodations such as the Parlour Suite, Poet’s Loft, and Drawing Loft. While we didn’t stay in these rooms, each offers a different layout while maintaining the same artful, lived-in sensibility.
The property also includes rooms in the Coach House, providing further options depending on group size or travel style, all aligned with the same design-forward approach.
Exploring Kingston

One of the best parts of staying at Kingston Carriage House is how easily Kingston becomes part of your day. From the property, it’s simple to walk to the waterfront, browse shops and galleries, or stop into cafés without much planning.
About 10 minutes away by car, Kingston, New York’s historic core, offers a different layer of the city. Lined with stone buildings, narrow streets, and preserved 18th-century architecture, the area reflects Kingston’s early role in American history—it was once the first capital of New York State in 1777.
This is a stay that supports exploration rather than escape—inviting you to move between Kingston’s neighborhoods, past and present, and return somewhere that feels familiar and comfortable.
For Travelers With Dogs

Kingston Carriage House is dog-friendly, and the surrounding neighborhoods make it easy to explore with dogs in tow. Many cafés and shops are dog-friendly, allowing you to wander, browse, and take breaks without constantly planning around restrictions.
In winter, restaurant options with dog-friendly patios are more limited, which can make dining a bit trickier. Even so, Kingston’s walkable streets and relaxed pace still make it a comfortable and enjoyable place to travel with dogs year-round.

Final Thoughts
Kingston Carriage House isn’t about spectacle. It’s about comfort, character, and staying somewhere that feels genuinely lived in.
The Captain’s Loft stood out for its artful restraint and unexpected touches—a reminder that thoughtful design doesn’t need to announce itself to be felt.
