A Dog-Friendly Guide to Kingston, New York: Cafés, History, and Creative Charm

Kingston is one of those places where charm reveals itself through wandering. As the former capital of New York, the city carries deep history, but it’s also creative, walkable, and welcoming for travelers exploring with dogs. Cafés tucked inside boutiques, murals scattered throughout town, and historic sites woven into everyday life make Kingston feel layered rather than curated.

Kingston sits in the heart of the Hudson River Valley, at the base of the Catskill Mountains along the Rondout Creek. Located roughly 90 miles north of New York City, Kingston is an easy 2-hour drive from NYC and about 5.5-hours from Washington, DC, making it a natural choice for a long weekend or a slower, extended stay. Its setting — river, mountains, and historic neighborhoods — shapes the way the city is experienced, especially on foot.

We visited in the winter, when the pace was quieter and evenings settled in early, but Kingston’s appeal isn’t seasonal. Its mix of history, art, food, and community makes it a place worth returning to year-round. If visiting in colder months, check shop and café hours in advance, as some operate on limited days during the week.

Coffee, Tea, and Eats

Eating in Kingston often feels like stepping into a space that serves more than just food. Many cafés are embedded within galleries, shops, or creative studios, making each stop part of a broader experience rather than a quick transaction.
